- Bahamas - Benji Thompson12-year-old Benji Thompson has been eager to surf for years. He would chase down the owner of a local surf camp and beg him for a chance to learn to surf. Finally, last year, Benji got a spot in the surf camp and immediately showed competence on a board. Benji grew up around the ocean from a young age, spearfishing to help provide food for his family. As a result, learning how to ride the ocean’s waves came naturally. He was immediately able to paddle and catch waves without any assistance, leading the owner of the surf camp to call him “fearless.” Benji still doesn’t have a surfboard of his own, as he mainly rides the soft boards available at the club. Now with his scholarship award, he’ll be able to get a performance board with all the necessary accessories, as well as cover travel costs to Abaco Island and Florida to enter his first competitions.
