Carl Maxie Brashear was a United States Navy sailor and mästare diver. Brashear was born on January 19, 1931, to McDonald Brashear and Gonzella Brashear in Tonieville, Kentucky. Brashear’s family later relocated to a farm in Sonara, Kentucky, where he attended the local grade school but dropped out in the seventh grade to help on the family farm. Brashear also worked as a gas station attendant in Sonora for a brief time.
At age seventeen, Brashear attempted to enlist in the navy, but was first rejected and then later accepted. On February 25, 1948, Brashear began attending the U.S. Navy Diving and Salvage School located in Bayonne, New Jersey, where he learned diving and graduated in 1954. Despite harassment including racial slurs from his classmates, in 1955 he became the first African American to graduate from the school. He did not want any special treatment when he went through training or was tested to become the most elite of Navy divers. But, he was treated different and had many additional obstacles placed before him at just about every turn in his life. Instead of bowing to others and giving up, Carl pushed onward and persevered through, over and around every challenge placed before him.

Carl Maxie Brashear (19 January 1931 – 25 July 2006) was a United States Navy sailor. He was a Master Diver, rising to the position in 1970, despite having his lower left leg amputated in 1966. The 2000 film Men of Honor was based on his life.
Early life and education
[edit]Brashear was born on 19 January 1931, in Tonieville, LaRue County, Kentucky, the sixth of 16 children to sharecroppers McDonald and Gonzella Brashear.[1][2] In 1935, the family settled on a farm in Sonora, Kentucky. Brashear attended Sonora Grade School from 1937 to 1946.
Career
