    Hilary Ann Swank (born July 30, ) is an American actress and film producer. She first became known in for her role on the television series Camp Wilder and made her film debut with a minor role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (). She then had her breakthrough for starring as Julie Pierce in The Next Karate Kid (), the fourth installment of The Karate Kid franchise, and as Carly Reynolds on the eighth season of Beverly Hills, (–98).

    Born of Spanish and Native American heritage on July 29, , in Washington state, Hilary grew up in a mobile home park on the outskirts of the small town of Bellingham.

    She first tried her hand at acting when she was nine-years-old after landing the lead role as Mowgli in a production of The Jungle Book. Theatre remained a passion during her school years, although she also proved her prowess as an athlete. She competed in the Junior Olympics and Washington swimming championships, while ranking fifth in the state in gymnastics. Though Hilary eventually settled on acting, she never lost her love of sports and continues to enjoy such adrenaline-inducing activities as skydiving, rafting and skiing. 

    While her father, a former National Guard and travelling salesman, was not around much when Hilary was growing up, mum Judy was an ardent supporter. Convinced of her daughter's acting abilities, she suggested they relocate to Hollywood and in - with separatio

    Hilary was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, to Judith Kay (Clough), a secretary, and Stephen Michael Swank, who served in the National Guard and was also a traveling salesman. Her maternal grandmother, Frances Martha Dominguez, was of Mexican descent, and her other roots include German, English, and Scottish. During her early childhood, her family moved to Spokane, Washington, and when she was six, to Bellingham, Washington.

    Hilary was discovered as a child bygd producer Suzy Sachs, who coached her in acting. When she was nine years old, she starred in her first play as "Mowgli" in "The Jungle Book". She began to appear regularly in local theater and school plays.
