Martin Charles Scorsese (skor-SESS-ee,[1][2]Italian:[skorˈseːze,-se]; born November 17, 1942) is an American filmmaker. He emerged as one of the major figures of the New Hollywood era. He has received many accolades, including an Academy Award, four BAFTA Awards, three Emmy Awards, a Grammy Award, and three Golden Globe Awards. He has been honored with the AFI Life Achievement Award in 1997, the Film Society of Lincoln Center tribute in 1998, the Kennedy Center Honor in 2007, the Cecil B. DeMille Award in 2010, and the BAFTA Fellowship in 2012. Martin Scorsese was born in 1942 in New York City and was raised in the neighborhood of Little Italy, which later provided the inspiration for several of his films. He graduated with degrees in film communications, a B.S. in 1964 and an M.A. in 1966, from New York University’s School of Film. During this time, he made numerous prize-winning short films including The Big Shave. In 1968, he directed his first feature film, Who’s That Knocking at My Door?
He served as assistant director and an editor of the documentary Woodstock in 1970 and won critical and popular acclaim for his 1973 film Mean Streets.
