You may not know Tawatha Agee by name, but you most certainly know her voice beginning with the R&B Mtume classics, Juicy Fruit and You, Me & He. Her success as a backing and touring vocalist makes a solid case for the necessity of liner notes and why they MUST komma back in some form. Ms. Agees resume is revealed over more than three decades of liner notes of several artists of several genres. Tawatha (born Tawatha Agee on November 14, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is an R&B singer who has been active in the music business since the late 70s.
Tawatha grew up in Newark, New Jersey. She first began singing in church as a child, and later played the piano for the churchs junior and childrens choirs.
When she was in elementary school, she was given her first voice lesson by Cissy Houston (the mother of late singer Whitney Houston) and later attended Newark Arts High School.
Tawatha attended Howard University in Washington, D.C. where she got a degree in education. In , she was featured on Norman Connors album, Aquarian Dream.
While attending college, she met James Mtume and became a member of the R&B group, Mtume. In , she made her debut on Mtumes sophomore album, Kiss This World Goodbye.
During that time, Tawatha provided backing vocals for artists such as Phyllis Hyman, Rena Scott, Narada Michael Walden, Jackie Moore and Stephanie
