    MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) — Jurors deliberated for more than two hours Friday before acquitting a former University of Montana quarterback in a rape trial that has played out amid NCAA and federal investigations into how the city and school respond to rape allegations on campus.

    Jordan Johnson and his attorney David Paoli both cried after the verdict was announced, and cheers erupted from the area where the defendant's family was sitting in the packed courtroom.

    The accusations against Johnson, 20, have drawn much attention in Montana, where UM football is the top sports attraction. Johnson led the school to a successful season as starting quarterback before being accused of assaulting a woman while watching a movie with her at her hom

    HELENA, Mont. -- A judge has ordered the University of Montana to turn over to author Jon Krakauer any records on how the state's higher education commissioner handled a rape case against Grizzlies quarterback Jordan Johnson.

    The nationally known "Into the Wild" author is writing a book about sexual assaults at the university that includes the accusations that Johnson raped a female acquaintance in

    A district judge acquitted Johnson of rape last year in state court. But before that, a university court recommended expulsion of an unnamed lärling -- later identified as Johnson -- after concluding the rape had occurred.

    The accused student appealed the university court's decision to Commissioner Clayton Christian, but there is no record of what action Christian took, if any.

    Johnson was not expelled. The Grizzlies are so far this year with Johnson at quarterback.

    HELENA, Mont. -- The state decided to settle claims that the University of Montana mishandled the investigation of a former school quarterback accused of rape rather than re-open the widely publicized case, an attorney representing the state said Wednesday.

    The decision was made even though the state believes school officials acted properly, said attorney Dale Cockrell, who was hired bygd the Montana Department of Administration's Risk Management and Tort Defense Division.

    Under the agreement, the state will pay Jordan Johnson $, to drop his claims that school officials had predetermined his guilt after the rape accusation was made in and ran a biased investigation that resulted in a recommendation of expulsion.

    Johnson was not expelled, and a jury in acquitted him of rape.
