&#;Where Do You Know From?&#;: An Exercise in Placing Ourselves tillsammans in the Classroom

Introduction

I developed the following exercise in the summer of for a particular graduate seminar I was assigned to teach for the first time that fall: ‘Foundations in Cultural Studies and Critical Theory’, a mandatory core seminar for students in McMaster University’s Cultural Studies and Critical Theory (CSCT) MA program. Since then, I have shared the exercise informally online and heard from numerous instructors that it facilitated helpful and illuminating introductory conversations in their courses as well. As the exercise seeks new readers and practitioners through this publication in MAI, I thought it would be appropriate to offer a slightly fuller account of where this document itself ‘knows from’. I frame the exercise this way not simply to fill out the story of my putting it together, but also to illustrate the importance of attending conscientiously to the ways we relate to one

We were supposed to be the next generation, all newfangled and melting-potted, but instead we were like Russian nesting dolls. When you opened our parents' bodies you found a replica of their struggle, no matter how hard we tried to transcend it. -Senna , We often write about what intimately touches us. I chose to write about mixed race because of the ways that it has infl uenced my own life. In sharing the following story about myself, I admit to some anxiety because I think this approach can teeter into a form of narcissism, an issue I explore in further depth in Chapter 2. Moreover, I make the case in this book that we must be wary of the political limitations of citing the lived, personal experience of individual mixed race people and using that as the sole basis for our theoretical discussions (see also Makalani ;and Ibrahim ).
