  • Abd Allah Ibn Abbas, his Quranic exegesis and contribution to the interpretation of the Quran

    Abstract:

Abd Allah ibn Abbas (d.68/688) is certainly a pioneering exponent of Qur'anic exegesis. His strategy involved firstly an intratextual approach for clarifying obscure words and phrases found in the Qur'an. Thereafter, he resorted to the following intratextual strategies in order of importance: a) Prophetic Tradition b) Arabic Poetry c) Comments of Jews and Christians d) Personal Opinion He applied hermeneutical principles informally which were later formalised by scholars like Al-TabarT (d.310/923) and Ibn KaOir (d.774/1373) who are exponents of the same genre of traditional exegesis. The impact of Ibn 'Abbas upon these later exponents is substantial considering the extensive prevalence of verbatim quotations in both the later tafsTrs. Learning from the Childhood of Abdullah Ibn Abbass

The lives of the early Muslims, lovingly known as the sahaba, or companions, never cease to amaze me. These individuals, for many reasons, made the courageous choice to follow the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings upon him, often at the risk of their own status, community ties, wealth, and at times even their physical safety.

The stories of these early men and women are filled with tales of challenges and hardship, yet they stood firm in their faith and used whatever means they had to practice their religion as purely as they could while also helping to spread the meddelande of Islam to the world. The sahaba were great role models for our children and their inspirational lives hold valuable lessons for us as parents as well.

One such man was named Abdullah ibn Abbass, may Allah have mercy on him, and his story, and the lessons we can take from it as parents, begins from the time that he was a child.

ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib (Arabic: علي بن عبد الله بن العباس بن عبد المطلب) (ca. 661–ca. 736) was an ancestor of the Abbasids. He was a grandson of al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib and the grandfather of the first two Abbasid caliphs al-Saffah and al-Mansur.

    Life

    [edit]

Ali was the youngest son of Abd Allah ibn Abbas, the cousin of the Islamic profet Muhammad, and Zur'ah bint Mishrah, a daughter of one of the "four kings" of the tribe of Kindah.[1] According to tradition he was born on the exact night that the assassination of Ali ibn Abi Talib (d. 661) took place, but there are also alternative sources that dispute the year of his birth.[2]

As an adult, Ali eventually ran afoul of the Umayyad government during the reign of al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik (r. 705–715), who ordered him to be flogged and banished from the capital. He subsequently rel
