In among the odd and diverse collection of the Kunsthalle, Hamburg there is the most spectacular room full of paintings by Caspar David Friedrich. In a collection that has been described as second rate paintings by first rate artists, the room of Friedrich&#;s must be an exception.
I have seen Friedrich&#;s paintings over the years and always loved them. Years ago, in Dresden at the Gemäldegalerie, I remember seeing Zwei Männer in Betrachtung des Mondes/ Two Men Contemplating the Moon() and being so mesmerized, as if I was an 19th century viewer, obeying the call to fall, or be elevated into, the highest realms of spiritual experience through art. I felt for a moment that I had glimpsed the power of enlightened vision away from the routines of life, as if in imitation of the two men at the edge of the world. In celebration of national poetry month, the artist Mark di Suvero has been recorded in his Queens studio reading a series of eight poems that have inspired his monumental sculptures. The project was launched bygd the Tippet Rise Art Center, the sprawling arts and classical music centre in Montana founded by the pianist, photographer and poet Peter Halstead and his wife, the abstract painter and philanthropist Cathy Halstead, where where Di Suvero has two large-scale works. The poems—ranging from Friedrich Hölderlin’s All the Fruit, which Di Suvero says references a variety of his rhythmic anti-gravity works, to Hadewijch’s All Things Confine, which accompanies his sculpture L'Allumé—“slyly suggest answers without exactly providing them”, Halstead says. In this shared workshop, choreographer Faustin Linyekula and Düsseldorf activist group Together We Push will examine how the questions posed in his performance Statue of Loss may be transferred to the city of Düsseldorf. They will use their own wealth of experience, their artistic and biographic tools, in the process. tillsammans We Push co-initiated a political debate about racism in Germany and Düsseldorf in To do this, they employed artistic means such as dance, poetry, and visual arts. Aiming to empower the Afro-German cultural scene in Düsseldorf, they make heard their voices as well as the voices of Düsseldorf youths through artistic and discursive exchange formats in the city’s cultural institutions.
Faustin Linyekula lives and works in Kisangani, in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Together with Opiyo Okach, he founded the Gàara Company, Kenia’s first contemporary dance group, in Nairobi in In , and back in the Congo, he created a space for dance and
