  • I have grown to realise that Ricky Gervais is far from just a comedian or actor. He uses his popularity as a position of power. Comedians are usually quick to be criticised for just their jokes, but Ricky Gervais also addresses his views on religion, And how he is far apposed from believing in any sort of god.

I built up a general brainstorm on contributing factors of Gervais’s career and past times.

    Background

Gervais worked initially in the music industry, attempting a career as a pop star in the 1980s with Seona Dancing and working as the manager of a then-unknown Suede before turning to comedy. Gervais appeared on The11 O’Clock Show on Channel 4 between 1998 and 2000. In 2000, he was given a Channel 4 talk show, Meet Ricky Gervais, and then achieved greater mainstream fame a year later with his BBC television series The Office. It was followed by Extras in 2005. He co-wrote and co-directed both series with Stephen Merchant. In addition to writing and directing

Stephen Merchanthas defended Ricky Gervais's kanal 4comedy Derek, claiming that there are people in the industry who are determined to take down the comedian.

Merchant, who worked with Gervais on The Officeand Extras, said that any "outrage" about the care home sitcom was an inevitable result of his friend's huge success.

"I feel like the knives are out for Ricky whatever he does," Merchant told Shortlist.

"It's happened to every successful performer in this country. Stephen Frywas targeted a while back - he was much loved in the days of Fry & Laurie, then he became 'Mr Know-It-All' and now he's a national treasure. It seems to be standard practice.

"People assume Ricky's agenda is how to shock people, but it's not. He explores areas that are uncomfortable, but never with the intention of just giggling in the corner like a schoolboy."
