    Biodata

    Mekonnen is a Professor of Cell and Human Physiology in the Department of Biology at the College of Natural and Computational Sciences of Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. She has published extensively in different peer reviewed scientific journals on topics of respiratory physiology, medicinal plants and other related topics. She has advised many MSc and PhD students and she has also mentored young professionals, specially women, over the last three decades. She was involved in leadership positions and has initiated a number of national, continental and international research networks and collaborations. In 2013, she was able to establish with other colleagues the Society of Ethiopian Women in Science and Technology, to help empower and mentor women academicians and researchers in Ethiopia. In 2015, she received the African Union Kwame Nkrumah Regional Scientific Award for Women in Science. She was appointed as Ambassador Scientist by the Alexand

    This time round, we proudly present to you the story of the first female Professor in Ethiopia, Yalemtsehay Mekonnen, a bio-medical scientist and a Professor of cell and human physiology in the College of Natural and Computational Sciences (CNCS) at Addis Ababa University.

    Professor Yalemtsehay Mekonnen, the first child among four siblings, was born in Asela, Ethiopia in 1947. Though she was born in Asela, she grew up in different places as a result of her father’s job. She went to schools in Dessie, Gojam an

    Passion in my view is to do the best you can in whatever position you are in. Since childhood I used to do things only that feel comfortable to my soul and the biggest one was knowledge; knowledge about mathematics, the universe, science, nature and so on, therefore as a ung girl I was confused which one to choose to pursue my education further, because everything seemed equally fascinating. However, as I grew up, I started to focus on one because I understood that I cannot be a master of all.

    What I dream for my community is at least to have the basics like shelter, food, health coverage and so on. I want to see a society where everybody is content with what she/he is doing, being respected and being listened to than just dreaming to be rich in materials. This is crucial. I am not saying being rich is harmful but the question should be how can one utilize that resource one has at stake.
