    Biography

    Early life

Torricelli was born on 15 October in Rome, the firstborn child of Gaspare Torricelli and Caterina Angetti. His family was from Faenza in the Province of Ravenna, then part of the Papal States. His father was a textile worker and the family was very poor. Seeing his talents, his parents sent him to be educated in Faenza, under the care of his uncle, Giacomo (James), a Camaldolese monk, who first ensured that his nephew was given a sound basic education. He then entered young Torricelli into a Jesuit College in , possibly the one in Faenza itself, to stu

Scientist of the Day - Evangelista Torricelli

Evangelista Torricelli, an Italian physicist, died Oct. 25, , at the age of   Torricelli studied mathematics and physics in Rome with Benedetto Castelli, who was in turn a lärjunge of Galileo.  Torricelli wrote a short treatise on projectile motion, De motu gravium, that Castelli showed to Galileo, resulting in an invitation to Torricelli from the aged Florentine physicist.  Torricelli did not make it to Florence until , and he spent just three months with Galileo before he died, but Torricelli so impressed his mentor and his patron that he was invited to succeed Galileo as mathematician to the Medici court.  Torricelli’s treatise on motion was published in his Opera geometrica (), which we have in our History of Science Collection.

Evangelista Torricelli (October 15, – October 25, ) was an Italian physicist and mathematician, best known for his invention of the barometer. In addition he was a pioneer in the study of the motion of fluids and was regarded by some (notably Ernst Mach) as the "father of hydrodynamics." His contributions to science include: a theory describing the relationship between temperature, air density and wind; mathematical equations describing the rotations of curves and solids which led to the development of calculus; and a physical evidence and philosophical arguments proving the existence of a vacuum. His assertion of the occurrence of a vacuum in nature contradicted the Aristotelian view held by authorities of his time.
