Albert Bierstadt: Landscapes of the American West
German-American artist Albert Bierstadt captured a transformative time in American history. His travels through Wyoming and the West gave Bierstadt a one-of-a-kind perspective for painting his best-known works in the 1850s and 1860s, and his grandiose landscapes and their idealized, pristine panoramas have sparked the imagination of generations.
Bierstadt was born on Jan. 7, 1830, in Solingen, Germany, the youngest of six children of Christina and Henry Bierstadt. While Albert was still a toddler, the family left aboard the Hope, bound for America. Leaving a region of Germany still recovering from Napoleonic Wars, they established themselves in New Bedford, Mass., where they settled into American life.
Albert attended local public schools. Little is known about his artistic influences before he was 20, but surely he showed aptitude for the arts in his youth; he was highly capable as a very young adult.

Although taken to task by critics in his later years for being excessive and unrefined, Bierstadt is today widely considered one of America's greatest landscape artists; a man whose paintings offer a unique picture of American natural history during the second half of the nineteenth century. Produced from photographs and sketches, he made epic panoramas of the untamed American West that proved immensely popular with the American public. Vast in scale, and overwhelming in their emotional impact, he applied color for romantic rather than naturalistic effect. Strongly influenced by his tours of europe, his paintings promoted the idea of conservation, culminating in the establishment of new National Parks, while at the same time highlighting the plight of Native Americans and the threat of extinction to the buffalo.

Albert Bierstadt was a landscape painter best known for his depictions of the American West. Born in Germany, he moved to Massachusetts with his family as a child. Bierstadt joined several journeys of the Westward Expansion, where he sketched and painted landscapes. He became part of the Hudson River School and Rocky Mountain School, both movements centered around romanticizing natural beauty in paintings.
Bierstadt’s paintings feature luminism art style with infusing light making it radiate a warm glow that highlights idyllic scenery. His success as an artist led him to have a studio on the Hudson River during his peak career years. He was also among the first painters to utilize photographs taken by others as references for large-scale works.
