Niels Henrik David Bohr (7 October 1885 – 18 November 1962) was a Danish theoretical physicist who made foundational contributions to understanding atomic structure and quantum theory, for which he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922. Bohr was also a philosopher and a promoter of scientific research.

Bohr developed the Bohr model of the atom, in which he proposed that energy levels of electrons are discrete and that the electrons revolve in stable orbits around the atomic nucleus but can jump from one energy level (or orbit) to another. Although the Bohr model has been supplanted by other models, its underlying principles remain valid. He conceived the principle of complementarity: that items could be separately analysed in terms of contradictory properties, like behaving as a wave or a stream of particles. The notion of complementarity dominated Bohr's thinking

Niels Bohr was a pioneering Danish physicist who made substantial contributions to quantum theory and the atomic model in the early 20th century. He studied physics and earned his doctorate from the University of Copenhagen. Combining Max Planck's quantum theory and Ernest Rutherford's nuclear model of the atom, Bohr developed the first theoretical model of atomic structure which explained spectral lines and won him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922. Bohr also developed the liquid droplet model of the atomic nucleus and made important contributions to quantum mechanics and complementarity. He helped found and later headed the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, which is dedicated to theoretical physics.

    Biography

Niels Bohr's father was Christian Bohr and his mother was Ellen Adler. Christian Bohr was awarded a doctorate in physiology from the University of Copenhagen in 1880 and in 1881 he became a Privatdozent at the university. Late in the same year he married Ellen, who was the daughter of David Adler, a Jewish politician with a high standing in Danish political and commercial life. Christian and Ellen had three children. The eldest was Jenny born in 1883 in the mansion which David Adler had owned opposite Christiansborg Castle where the Danish Parliament sat. Ellen's mother had continued to live in this house after her husband David Adler died in 1878 and Ellen had gone back to her mother's home to have her
